Why World Vision is in Philippines

The Philippines witnessed back-to-back disasters and challenges in 2020: In January, a volcano south of Manila erupted, displacing thousands of children and families and unsettling educations and livelihoods. In November, two typhoons battered the country weeks apart from each other, causing massive floods that destroyed tens of thousands of houses and farmlands and affected millions of people. The COVID-19 pandemic continues to make life more difficult, especially for vulnerable families living in the poorest areas. Along with the public health crisis, the pandemic also caused economic disruption, leading to permanent losses in businesses, jobs, and income. Many households can’t meet even their most basic needs, like food, water, and healthcare. Reports of violence against women and children and cases of online sexual exploitation of children also increased. Thanks to government and health sector collaborations, along with partners like donors, corporations, churches, and others, over 39 million Filipino children and their families received care in 2020 including emergency essentials and psychosocial support. During disasters, local communities and hospitals were equipped with health supplies, hygiene kits, tents, food, and agricultural assistance. Families learned more about child protection, and kids received educational materials to keep up with their studies.

We never give up on people

World Vision child sponsorship looks at all the things that prevent children from surviving and thriving in their community, and then works with that community to bring all the pieces of the puzzle together to build a better life for all children. For sponsors, it’s a personal way to show God’s love to a child in need in a life-changing way.
