Honduras

In 2018, political protests about the reelection of the country’s president turned violent. Citizens have little trust in the government because of widespread corruption and injustice. Honduras has one of the highest rates of inequality in Latin America, meaning an elite minority benefits from politics while already-vulnerable families and children suffer disproportionately. The country’s economy faces instability because it’s largely based on food exports, which can be directly affected by natural disasters. Honduras is one of the countries in the world most prone to natural disasters or climate change effects. And other challenges exist for Hondurans. More than two in five rural families live in extreme poverty and don’t know where their next meals will come from. Many children experience a limited childhood because they have to go to work, often in exploitative conditions. Crime and violence are rampant. The average amount of education is only seven years, which negatively impacts kids’ future prospects. Thanks to the generosity of donors, in 2018 about 118,000 Honduran families were supported with disaster readiness, job opportunities, and more. Tens of thousands of people now have access to clean drinking water. Children and families learned how to improve their sanitation and hygiene behaviors, to stay free of diseases. Communities were equipped with plans to reduce the impacts of disasters, should they occur. We’re helping to strengthen schools so children get quality educations, and raising awareness among families about the negative effects of child labor. Families learned skills for parenting with love and respect instead of violence, so kids can grow up better protected.
